It’s spot the crazy foreigner time… we’re the ones out in the storm going “Ooooh! Ahhhh!” whilst the tornado siren is going off in the background. The first time a tornado warning went off after we moved to the US we went rushing out to the deck with our ice-creams to watch the sky.
Actually these photos were all taken from a moving vehicle – don’t worry, I wasn’t driving – so the quality isn’t the best but it was such a cool storm I had to snap it.
Love the storms we get here in the Mid-West. They’re so…. trying to think of a good word for it…. monumental. That’s a good word! But most of the time they bluster out in about an hour or so.
Anyway we beat it home – my mum was driving like a bat out of hell. She didn’t want her new car to be dinged by the hail!!!
Had to post-process at least ONE of them with a bit of OTT Photoshopping.
As a PS, I know tornados and storms are not a laughing matter for the people affected by them so no offence meant.

Whoah, these are pretty scary photos. Glad you beat the storm home. I love a good storm but usually only when I’m safely tucked up inside. 🙂

I love storms now because my dog doesn’t care, but my last dog was petrified of storms and it was such a shame to see him suffer. This dog sleeps through them!

Lucky you! Harry is petrified of storms and always ends up on my bed almost on top of me! A quivering mess.

Aww poor Harry. Bob-the-dog (my last Airedale) used to run upstairs and try to fit in my daughters wardrobe… Which was totally impossible due to her mountain of clothes!

No filters – my compact camera is a Fuji F900exr. A great wee pocket camera.
To be honest I didn’t photoshop it all that much, just adjusted the levels, contrast and tone then black and whited it of course. I didn’t touch the buildings – the light really was shining down on them through the clouds.
But I am a Photoshop-Ninja of course 😉

I once got caught in a classic Mid-West hail storm that was really weird, the hail stones were only dropped in a swathe about 70 yards wide that went cross country for a few miles! Oh yeah, it was about four inches deep on the ground as well!

Isn’t it weird how it can be raining (hail) on the one side of the street but dry on the other?
The storm yesterday was amazing – the colours (on the ground) were so bright and the sky was so black. I would have asked mum to stop but she was panicing so I had to settle for ‘out-the-car-window’ shots 😦

It is peculiar how those storms are so defined, it’s like a large shower curtain is drawn across the land!

Yes, we could actually see where the edge of the storm was and therefore avoid it. We got about 10 minutes of rain on the very edge of it then it was behind us. Very cool !

I grew up in the midwest and my heart rate rises and I feel weak in the knees whenever I think about tornadoes. I live in Seattle now and we rarely have thunderstorms here. Great images!
